Top 5 PPE Tips for Holiday Let Owners
Last Updated on October 6, 2025 by admin
When you think of personal protective equipment (PPE), you probably imagine construction sites or factories. But holiday lets have their own share of risks too, and sometimes a bit of PPE can make all the difference. From cleaning products to garden tools, here are five simple tips to keep in mind.
- Don’t overcomplicate it
PPE doesn’t need to be high-tech. In a holiday home setting, it’s often the basics that matter most – like rubber gloves for cleaning, oven gloves in the kitchen, or sturdy shoes for carrying out maintenance. Think about the tasks you or your helpers actually do, and match the protection to the job.
- Keep guests in mind
Most PPE is for you, your cleaners, or your gardener – but guests can be at risk too. If strong cleaning products are left under the sink without childproof caps, for example, that’s a hazard. Lock away anything that could cause harm and keep potentially dangerous equipment out of sight.
- Store it properly
A pair of safety goggles or gardening gloves won’t do much good if they’re damp, dirty, or falling apart. Store PPE in a clean, dry place so it’s ready when needed. Replacing old or damaged items promptly is far cheaper (and easier) than dealing with an accident.
- Choose comfort and fit
Badly fitting PPE can cause more problems than it solves. Loose gloves, heavy boots, or masks that don’t sit properly can all get in the way. Make sure whatever you buy is the right size and comfortable enough to actually use.
- Remember your duty of care
Even if you don’t employ staff directly, as a holiday let owner you’re still responsible for safety. If you do bring in help – cleaners, gardeners, handymen – you may need to provide suitable PPE and show them how to use it. Keeping a simple record of what you’ve provided and when is a good habit to get into.
Holiday lets are usually low-risk, but accidents can still happen. A few small investments in the right PPE – and a little care in how it’s stored and used – can help you protect yourself, your guests, and anyone working in your property.
